A Life of Service:

The Theodora Smiley Lacey Portrait Tour

Presented by Philip Smallwood

Earlier this year, we launched A Life of Service: The Theodora Smiley Lacey Portrait Tour to honor the lifelong work of Dr. Lacey—a civil rights icon, educator, and community leader. This nationwide tour celebrates her remarkable legacy while inspiring the next generation of leaders through exhibitions, private events, and meaningful conversations.

The centerpiece of the tour is an exquisite watercolor portrait by renowned artist P. Smallwood, capturing Dr. Lacey’s strength, grace, and enduring impact, The portrait is currently on exhibit at the Newark Museum of Art through December 1st, as part of the Newark Arts Festival. Alongside the portrait, we’re inviting audiences to support the online petition advocating for its permanent display in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Coming in 2025, the A Life of Service podcast will bring together community leaders, artists, and educators to explore the themes of service, leadership, and empowerment that Dr. Lacey exemplifies. Learn More…
